about

Imagine the film Stand By Me put to music and set on a motorway. Imagine barrel-rolling out of a moving vehicle, your head spinning with visions of time travel, the great outdoors, coming of age films, computer games, environmentalism, surrealism, edgelands, hyper-mobility. The words of Brautigan, Proulx, Vonnegut, Barry, Thoreau –Breaking Away, Wolf Creek, Donnie Darko, Upstream Colour –Mike Cooper, Grandaddy, Dianne Cluck, Guided By Voices, Broken Social Scene.

Imagine looking up and seeing the motorway as a form of time travel; people hurtling at 70 mph in metal boxes, the world around them smeared and splintered into a mulchy paste.

Towns, fields, forests, streams, valleys - places you could otherwise spend months walking through and immersing yourself in, gone in a few blurred seconds.

Ste says:

“I started this album with images. Before I’d written a song, I made a collage around a motorway with the eagle flying over towards the mountains. Then songs started to arrive. Usually, while I was staring out the window of a train or car. Or in the case of Hennigan’s Stead, riding a digitally animated horse whilst struck down with gastric flu. The only thing I had in mind was that whilst I was going at one pace, the eagle was with me going her pace. The faster I was going, the more I wanted to stop. When I’d finished, I realised they all had a loose theme.

“This idea that the world can pass by you in a blink and the relentless acceleration of many facets of life, if we live with our heads always pushed half-way into the future –how rich are our experiences, how diminished are they, is this what makes us constantly yearn to do more, quicker, tick experiences off and accumulate them, pin them like butterflies, rather than allowing ourselves to be immersed in them.

“If the richness of our experiences is diminished, our connections to things diminish, and in turn our emotions and feelings diminish. I found myself wondering how this affects our depth of understanding and our ability to feel.”

Listen to the synopsis of a novel summarised into 10 minutes. Stun-gun your way through songs like an abattoir worker dropping cattle. Finish your loved ones’ sentences for them. Watch the trailer for a film and say you’ve seen that film.

Barrel-roll out of your little metal box.

You escaped.
